Toto Wolff Set to Sell Stake Pricing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three races left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
